The diving season in Rayong typically runs from October to the end of April, offering access to a fascinating mix of natural topography and artificial structures in the Gulf of Thailand.

Site Characteristics and Topography

Rayong's dive sites can be broadly grouped by the environment they offer, providing diverse experiences for all skill levels:

Spotlight on Key Sites

1. The Petra Wreck: An Artificial Ecosystem

The Petra Wreck is Rayong's signature dive. This large, intact vessel settled long ago and is now completely colonized, serving as a vibrant, complex ecosystem.

  • Experience: The wreck is heavily encrusted with growth and corals, creating a dramatic backdrop for exploration.

  • Marine Life: The structure provides shelter for massive schools of Barracuda, huge Groupers, and various Snapper. Look closely for giant Moray Eels lurking in the ship's recesses.

2. Koh Thalu & Nearby Islands: Coral Gardens

These sites offer classic tropical reef diving with generally clear waters and protected environments, perfect for observing small reef behavior.

  • Experience: Divers will find rich coral formations, including brain coral and colorful whip coral, making them excellent spots for macro photography.

  • Marine Life: You can expect to see abundant Clownfish nestled in anemones, vibrant Angelfish, and a variety of shrimp and crab species hidden among the rocks.

3. Alhambra Rock: The Pelagic Highway

These sites are known for their dramatic underwater topography and potential for encounters with the larger ocean dwellers.

  • Experience: Diving here involves navigating large underwater cliffs and boulders.

  • Marine Life: Keep an eye on the blue! The consistent flow of water past the rocks attracts the larger game fish, including King Mackerel and large schools of Jacks.
